In the second half of this year (2024), twelve people participated as “Recommenders” in a single round of a grant-recommendation process for the Funder Jaan Tallinn. The total funding expected to be distributed in association with this round is $19.86MM.
In the interest of connecting organizations in need of funding to other potential donors, we are publishing further funding recommendations beyond the funding level provided by Jaan Tallinn.
For more information on who participated in this round, the recommendation process that was used, and which organizations were already recommended funding, see the SFF-2024 Recommendations Announcement for more details.
Recommenders specified marginal utility functions for funding each application, and adjusted those functions through discussions with each other as the round progressed. Similarly, Funders specified and adjusted different utility functions for deferring to each Recommender.
To generate the recommendations for further funding opportunities, we simulated two scenarios: increasing the total funding budget by an additional $5MM, and by an additional $10MM. In each scenario this simulated budget was allocated proportionally among Recommenders based on the utility functions of the Funders in this round. This allowed us to extrapolate what organizations would receive new or additional funding based on Recommenders’ marginal utility functions.
We also established a minimum recommendation threshold. We’ve only shared recommendations for further funding opportunities that are 1) at least $100,000 or 2) at least 10% of the base funding request made by the organization.
If you make a significant contribution to any of the organizations after reading these recommendations for further funding, we encourage you to reach out to us at sff-contact@googlegroups.com.
We’re very interested in learning about any impact that comes from sharing these recommendations.
